Get a Dose of Nature at Work!

Ecotherapy refers to healing and growth nurtured by healthy interaction with the earth. It is also known as “green therapy” and “earth-centered therapy." It is the applied practice of the field of ecopsychology developed by Theodore Roszak. It stems from the belief that people are part of the web of life and that our psyches are not separate from our environment. Ecotherapy might sound novel, but it isn't. It has ancient roots. For years, people have known the healing effects of nature, and there is an impressive set of research to back it up.

Connecting with nature has many positive health benefits. It causes people to report being less angry, depressed, stressed, anxious, and express more overall positive emotions. It improves mood and self-esteem, increases emotional resilience and energy levels, restores mental energy, improves short-term memory, increases alertness, and relaxes the nervous system.

What is even more impressive is that individuals need not spend time in a green environment to experience the positive effects. While the benefits of having direct contact with nature are extensive, research shows that just a glimpse of nature from a window or photographs of nature can improve people's overall mood, mental health, and life satisfaction. Hospital patients have a reduced need for pain medication after viewing pictures depicting nature. Office workers who have a view of nature from a window report higher job and life satisfaction than those who don't have such a view. Children who live near green space have a greater capacity for paying attention, delaying gratification, and inhibiting impulses than children who live in an area surrounded by concrete. The addition of flowers and plants to a workplace positively affects creativity, productivity, and problem-solving. With all these benefits, who wouldn't want to be surrounded by a calm, natural environment!

Ashleigh Diserio has studied in the field of ecotherapy and personally witnessed the significant difference ecotherapy principles have in transforming the corporate environment. Ashleigh incorporates nature into her consulting—whether it's holding meetings outdoors, bringing nature indoors, taking lunch breaks outside, or using more intensive nature-based activities when working with victims of crime. She recently attended training where she was delighted to learn that in nature, our minds process a lot less information than normal, and they don't wear themselves out by concentrating. The beauty of nature slows the ‘thought-chatter’ which runs through our minds. To experience the positive benefits of nature, it doesn't require a significant time commitment. One can benefit from spending just 15 minutes a day in or around nature. So, when working with Ashleigh Diserio Consulting, expect to get a dose of nature!
